Purpose:
Presented to an instructor in Science who shows excellence in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching, curriculum development or educational leadership. The award is to recognize and honour faculty who develop a positive, learning-centred environment in the Faculty of Science. It is also intended to highlight and share examples of excellence.
Criteria:
The committee will be examining the application packages for evidence of:
- teaching science in the context of discovery and invention
- integrating knowledge of current research discoveries as well as developing student research skills and thinking
- engendering curiosity and lifelong learning
- developing self-directed learning
- motivating and engaging students
- creating an environment to support learning
- demonstrating extra effort to be accessible to help and mentor students
- having impact on student learning within a course or program
- course or program design and development
- leadership
- having impact beyond the university
These aspects may be demonstrated at the undergraduate or graduate level, through teaching, curriculum development or other educational leadership activities.
Eligibility:
All instructors teaching in the Faculty of Science in the last twelve months are eligible for nomination. Nominees must not have received this award during the previous 5 years.
Nomination Process:
Nominations may be made by colleagues, students or through self-nomination.
Application packages will include:
1. a nomination letter that highlights the evidence of the candidate’s excellence
2. a teaching dossier, which must include:
a. a teaching philosophy and
b. evidence of impact on students, including Student Evaluations of Teaching (SET) scores
and may include other relevant evidence and information, with a particular focus on the past five years, such as:
c. courses taught
d. teaching and assessment methods used
e. student supervision: undergraduate and/or graduate
f. letters from colleagues, students, and peers external to the university eg. student feedback
h. teaching development (personal and professional development related to teaching)
i. course and curriculum design and development
j. leadership, including pedagogical services internal and external to the university
k. impact within the university and beyond the university

Review Process:
Application packages will be circulated to the Award Committee electronically for individual review. The committee will meet to discuss the applications, and reach a decision.
The Award Committee will be struck and chaired by the Dean of Science, three science faculty members from different departments (including at least one previous award winning instructor) one graduate and one undergraduate student as well as a non-voting member from the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Rotation of Departmental representatives on an agreed-upon schedule will ensure that all Departments have an opportunity to participate in this process over a 3 – 5 year period.
Award:
The Award will be given to a maximum of two individuals each year. Successful applicants will receive a $2,000.00 research grant, and a certificate that will be presented at the Faculty of Science Spring & Shout event on April 3, 2019, and will be highlighted at the Annual Celebration of Teaching Excellence hosted by the Centre for Teaching and Learning.
