Abstract:

 
Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) raises unique privacy issues which must be considered in the embedded system design. However, quantification of the privacy threats is a major challenge in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks. There are several Pseudonym Changing Schemes(PCS) proposed as effective de-identification approaches to prevent the inference of Personally Identifiable Information(PII). However, for various reasons, none of the proposed schemes received public acceptance. In this research, we propose a framework to assess the effectiveness of PCSs in VANET with a systematic approach. This research introduces a standard methodology to evaluate and compare VANET PCSs using a generic simulation setup to obtain realistic and consistent results. We also propose two  Intelligent  Adversary  Placement schemes  that  aim  to  maximize  the degree of observation for attackers with limited capabilities. Finally, we present a Context-Aware and Traffic based PCS that addresses the vulnerabilities of existing pseudonym changing schemes that were identified in our evaluations. The proposed strategy focuses on eliminating the static triggers for pseudonym change and leverages the situation for changing pseudonyms that increases anonymity.
