The abundance of user-generated content on social networks provides the opportunity to build models that are able to accurately and effectively extract, mine and predict users’ interests with the hopes of enabling more effective user engagement, better quality delivery of appropriate services and higher user satisfaction. While traditional methods for building user profiles relied on AI-based preference elicitation techniques that could have been considered to be intrusive and undesirable by the users, more recent advances are focused on a non-intrusive yet accurate way of determining users’ interests and preferences. In this talk, (1) we introduce the history and motivation, (2) the information sources that are used for extracting user interests, (3) various types of user interest profiles at individual and community levels that have been proposed in the literature

 

Hossein Fani is an Assistant Professor at the School of Computer Science, University of Windsor. He has been the team lead in NSERC Industrial Research Chair on Social Media Analytics and Postdoc Research Fellow at Ryerson University. He has worked in the broad area of Social Network Analytics with special attention to content-based and temporal user community detection. His research concerns user community detection, user interest modelling, social network analysis, text mining, information retrieval, and machine learning. Hossein has extensively published in venues such as CIKM, ECIR and WSDM. His peer-reviewed journal publications also appear in premier international journals, including Elsevier’s Information Processing & Management (IP&M) and Wiley’s Computational Intelligence (CI). His PhD work has resulted in a patent with USPTO. He is also a PC member for conferences such as SIGIR, ECIR, ACL, and NAACL. Hossein received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, in May 2020. He holds M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Computer Science from Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran.
