Title: Étale Groupoids and their C*-algebras (Part 2)

Abstract: Groupoids can be thought of as a generalization of a group in which multiplication may only be partially defined. Their definition and basic properties will be introduced. Next, topological groupoids and how their topological and algebraic properties are related will be examined. This will lead to the notion of an étale groupoid, which is a groupoid analogue of a discrete group. Some important examples will be explored. Finally, the use of groupoids in operator algebras will be discussed, including how étale groupoids can be used to construct and study C*-algebras.
