Shifting Borders

At the edge of the Detroit River, where one city faces another across a narrow stretch of water, a border is said to exist. But where, exactly, is it?

This exhibition begins from this geographic point—a visible shoreline, a bridge, a crossing —and asks how the border exceeds its physical form. Archival materials reveal a moment when the crossing was framed as accessible, inviting, even marketable. Tourist brochures, maps, and signage presented the border as an inviting threshold, even a “happy” crossing. Works from contemporary artists question the role of borders today as they have become increasingly fortified around the globe. Revisiting this archive today raises new questions and asks whether it was ever equally open for everyone? Did its apparent invisibility depend on one’s position? The shift explored here is not only territorial but experiential.

—Guest Curated by Niku Koochak, with students from VSAR 3900 Curating as Cultural Practice.

Participating artists: Emma Feliciano, Marc Ngui, Huyen Nguyen, Amin Rehman, Camilo Silva, Alejandro Tamayo.

The Piano as a Stroyteller

Sunday, March 22, 7:30pm

Armouries Performance Hall, 353 Freedom Way

It's a third-year recital telling a journey from the Baroque era to the Modern era. From the architectural clarity of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in C-sharp Major to the dramatic intensity of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Pathétique” Sonata, this recital explores the piano’s remarkable ability to speak, narrate, and transform emotion into sound. Each work reveals a different voice: the luminous counterpoint of Bach, the storm and defiance of Beethoven, the evocative colors of François Morel’s Étude de sonorité No. 2, the sweeping lyricism of Frédéric Chopin’s Ballade No. 3 in A-flat Major, and the vivid, impressionistic landscapes of Claude Debussy’s Estampes. Across centuries and styles, the piano becomes narrator, painter, and poet—inviting us into stories of structure and freedom, conflict and beauty, memory and imagination.

Join us in celebrating our published Synthesis artists at Shō Studios on March 29th from 2pm-6pm. There will be a gallery exhibition paired with a series of live readings featuring the submitted and selected work from our University of Windsor Synthesis students! We will have sponsored beverages from Pelee Island Winery as well as light snacks for your enjoyment.

See you there!
