Transposition

Transposition presents work by students in VSAR 3130: Advanced Painting. Each painting derives from a single photographic image. The photo is used as a point of departure for exploring the transition from photography to painting. The paintings demonstrate how visual information can be translated, or transposed, from one medium into another through changes in colour, composition, detail, and material. The resulting works handle painting as a process of reinterpretation and decision-making, in which an image is reconsidered through the material, formal, and gestural possibilities of paint.
