Downtown Mission, Windsor

Destinations for 2017/18

These were the site locations and projects for the 2017/2018 Alternative Spring Break program.

Students will travel to Walpole Island to develop our partnership with the Walpole First Nation. The ASB team will help build capacity for the reconstruction of Walpole Island history, and strengthen bonds with the on-reserve student population. This project will contribute to addressing our commitments under the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Students will assist with cataloguing and archiving artifacts at the Heritage Centre. Students will learn about traditional values and history in the First Nation community, as well as the challenges present at Walpole Island. Following the ASB, participants are welcome also to participate in a traditional ceremony in Windsor. This is a great opportunity for students interested in the learning about Aboriginal traditions, and helping build relationships that will support the educational future for Walpole Island students.

Students will stay on the campus of the University under conditions simulating the homeless experience. During the day, the ASB Downtown Mission team will immerse themselves in the life of the Mission, and help prepare for the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser. We will gather stories from DM clients and staff, and shape performances that will be presented to the Coldest Night walkers. Performances will happen at stations we will choose along the walk route, and will deepen the walk experience for the walking audience.  The team will learn about the conditions that create homelessness, and participate actively in strategies that mitigate its effects. This opportunity will help you deepen your knowledge about poverty, homelessness, and social justice, and help build sustainable relationships that will support social agencies in Windsor.

The ASB Downtown Mission team is challenging area schools, and also UWindsor Alumni, to join us in supporting the Coldest Night of the Year walk!
