Special Honours Conferred by External Organizations

The following prestigious awards and honours were conferred by external organizations to University of Windsor researchers in 2021:

Aalborg University Honorary Doctorate

Hoda ElMaraghyDr. Hoda ElMaraghy of the Department of Mechanical, Automotive and Materials Engineering was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Denmark’s Aalborg University in recognition of her seminal contributions to the development of modern manufacturing systems and her long-standing collaboration with the Aalborg University Department of Materials and Production. In its announcement, Aalborg University acknowledged Dr. ElMaraghy as one of the most influential researchers in smart production systems and among the first researchers to explore the use of “Learning Factories”. The announcement also recognized Dr. ElMaraghy as “a role model for women in engineering”, calling her “an inspiration for women in research and engineering around the world”.

Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering

Ram BalachandarDr. Ram Balachandar of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering in recognition of his pursuit of excellence, influential contributions, and demonstrative leadership throughout his remarkable career in civil engineering.

The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering was established to develop and uphold high standard for civil engineering in Canada and to promote the public image of the civil engineering profession nationally. Fellowship recognized members for career achievements and contributions to the field.

Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists Member

Adrian GutaDr. Adrian Guta of the School of Social Work was inducted as a Member of the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, Canada’s first and foremost national system of multidisciplinary recognition for an emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership.

Dr. Guta is a nationally and internationally recognized expert on health equity and access for marginalized communities whose innovative interdisciplinary research intersects the social work, public health, and ethics. His ground-breaking, community-engaged work has informed understanding of the health needs and applied health issues of diverse and marginalized communities, resulting in important policy and programmatic changes that are impacting lives in Canada and around the world.

Ontario Bar Association Excellence in Class Actions Award

Jasminka KalajdzicProfessor Jasminka Kalajdzic of the Faculty of Law was the recipient of the first Excellence in Class Actions Award from the Ontario Bar Association.

The Ontario Bar Association established the Excellence in Class Actions Award to recognize outstanding members for exceptional achievements, service, and contributions to the development of class action law through advocacy, teaching, writing, speaking, volunteering, pro-bono work, or legislative reform; leadership in practice; maintaining the highest standards of professional competence, including integrity and civility; and commitment to the community at large.

Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Technical Committee on Services Computing Rising Star Award

Ning ZhangDr. Ning Zhang received the Rising Star Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Technical Committee on Services Computing, which recognizes very promising individuals who are in the early stages of their independent research careers, but have already made outstanding, impactful, and potentially long-lasting contributions to the research and practice of services computing.

Dr. Zhang was recognized for the impact of his contributions to the research community.

IT World Canada, Women in Security & Resilience Alliance, and Canadian Women in Security Forum Canada’s Top Women in Cybersecurity

Dima AlhadidiDr. Dima Alhadidi of the School of Computer Science was named one of Canada’s Top Women in Cybersecurity by the IT World Canada Women in Security and Resilience Alliance and Canadian Women in Security Forum. Dr. Alhadidi was identified for the accolade by her peers in recognition of her role as a trailblazer in cybersecurity and her achievements in the field.

Distribution has been acquired by Mongrel Media (Canada) and Gravitas Ventures (World). It was released on DVD/VOD December 2020, Air Canada January 2021, and CraveTV in June 2021.
