Victim of human trafficking shares her story of survival

Several years ago, Taylor left her homeland and came to Canada with her husband and children looking for a better life.

“I had the idea that we were going to start over, maybe go to school, that sort of pretty dream,” said Taylor, who didn’t use her real name or any identifying details out of concern for her safety.

Instead of chasing a dream, she fell into a nightmare of torment and abuse. Her husband physically abused her and eventually started pimping her and two other girls out for sex.

Donald Leslie receives Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award

A significant number of University of Windsor staffers, faculty members and both past and present members of the board have been awarded for their contributions to country in conjunction with the sixtieth anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne.  Among the UWindsor recipients was Donald R. Leslie, professor emeritus at the School of Social Work.

Social Work professor recognized for Excellence in Research

Alan Wildeman still fondly recalls his first foray into research.

A young master’s student, he was studying the unusual phenomenon of the prairie crocus, a flower which, unlike most, only shows the top of its stem above ground. The rest remains rooted below ground, perhaps as an ecological evolutionary adaptation to protect itself from being eaten by deer and other animals.

Social Work student’s short film on Ford City

A University of Windsor graduate wants to brighten the city with a quick look at a community that is fighting back. With help from a small grant from the Social Work Students Association, Matt Krawl has created a short film about Ford City, the neighbourhood east of Walkerville centred on Drouillard Road.

“I hope to leave a mark on Windsor by showing the good things about the area,” said Krawl.

Tenacious student credits success to UWindsor support

Jennifer Bauder hopes, when she graduates from UWindsor, to work in a field providing counseling to women and children. In the meantime, this mother of two, who is studying social work and disability studies, has some advice for her fellow students: “Don’t be too proud to ask for help.”
