Passionate teacher honoured for inspiring students

A passion for teaching mixed with an empathetic and non-judgemental approach earned Social Work professor Dr. Jill Grant an Alumni Award for Distinguished Contributions to University Teaching, during the University’s 103rdth Convocation ceremonies.

A former student says that Dr. Grant is an exceptional teacher who, “does not only teach the course material but inspires her students to learn, to appreciate what they are learning, and then do something with that knowledge in the world.”

Dr. Grant says her teaching is guided by an overall philosophy and belief in creating a respectful classroom environment.

“This focus on respect creates an atmosphere of trust, where students and professor co-construct knowledge and develop reflexive critical thinking about Social Work research.”

This philosophy has been noted by Dr. Grant’s faculty colleagues.  Many have said that her reputation as an enthusiastic, responsive and versatile teacher is well established in the School of Social Work.

The Alumni Award for Distinguished Contributions to University Teaching was established in 1987 to honour and recognize excellence in all areas of teaching, including classroom presentation, curriculum development, versatility, teaching methods, and student support.
