Social justice conference promotes teachers as agents of change

By making a difference in their students and their classrooms, teachers can make a difference in the world. That was the theme of the sixth annual Social Justice in Education Conference, held Friday, February 1, in the Education Building.

In addition to presentations on topics as diverse as Aboriginal history, intercultural communication, civil liberties and addressing disabilities, the daylong event included a volunteer fair and exhibit of student projects promoting pluralism.

Art gallery to showcase work of Aboriginal youths

An exhibition opening this weekend at the Art Gallery of Windsor will feature works by local youths participating in an educational program through the campus Aboriginal Education Centre.

The 4 Winds STEM – Beginning Time Teaching Project is aimed at encouraging Aboriginal students in grades six, seven and eight to pursue education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines.

Screen Free Day to mark University of Windsor’s first technology fast

Today—Friday, January 18—will mark the University’s first Screen Free Day: everyone is encouraged to turn off all devices that have a screen and use traditional methods instead of technology to get through the day.

Rev. Chris Valka of Campus Ministry says “Originally the event was going to be called ‘Turn off for Tolerance,’ but the name was changed when the event was made a part of Mental Health Awareness Week.”

Lancer hockey players give back to local youths

Lancer men’s hockey captain Brett Vandehogan is known as “the Roadrunner” in Blenheim, where he starred on the Blenheim Blades junior team. Now an education student, he is working with local youth to pass on the skating skills that earned him that nickname.

Vandehogan and Lancer teammates Brett Oliphant, Spencer Pommells, Matt Renaud, D.J. Turner and Parker VanBuskirk—all involved in teaching and coaching—spent an hour on the ice with peewee players from the Blenheim area, Tuesday at Windsor Arena.

'Menaissance' a reaction to fear of lost masculinity, education researcher says

Concerns expressed by some commentators that feminism and queer politics is emasculating men and creating a new generation of sissies is resulting in a “Menaissance,” according to a Faculty of Education professor.

The phenomenon is characterized by males trying to recapture their lost masculinity, however the fear that men are becoming increasingly effeminate is nothing new, says Chris Greig.

Provost names acting dean for Faculty of Education

Professor Karen Roland will begin a one-year term as acting dean of the Faculty of Education on January 1.

A four-time UWindsor grad (BA 1993, B.Ed. 1994, M.Ed. 2000, PhD 2009), Dr. Roland has worked at the University since 1994, first in the equity office and currently as an experiential learning specialist. Her ongoing research interests are restorative justice, equity and peer education.

Provost Leo Groarke invited faculty and staff to welcome Roland to her new role.

Changes at the Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor

The University of Windsor announced today that Dr. Clinton Beckford has commenced an administrative Leave and unpaid suspension from his position as Dean of the Faculty of Education.

This will be in effect until June 30, 2014, and is in recognition of an academic integrity breach involving plagiarism.

An acting dean will be appointed in the weeks to come.
