Lancer coach recognized as champion of equity

Ontario University Athletics has recognized Isaiah Johns, defensive secondary coach for Lancer football, for his work to support equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Johns is the second-ever recipient of the conference’s Champion of EDI Award, following its introduction a year ago.

He has been a Greater Ontario Black Experience Pillar Lead through TD, as well as a diversity and inclusion specialist therein. Last summer, Johns represented TD and the Windsor football team at the Emancipation Celebration at the Fogolar Furlan club, while also being a part of Black History Month presentations.

A linebacker coach and co-special teams coordinator with Team Ontario’s U16 team, Johns has also presented for Rapha Youth Services on financial literacy on behalf of TD and was involved in a math competition for a local youth group.

Also earning provincial honours are Windsor football players:

  • defensive end Kolade Amusan, offensive lineman George Una, defensive lineman Muftah Ageli, and wide receiver Javonni Cunningham, named first-team all-stars;
  • defensive back Istvan Assibo-Dadzie and linebacker Devin Veresuk, named second-team all-stars;
  • and linebacker Jason Rushatsi, named to the conference all-rookie team.

OUA also conferred first-team all-star status on men’s soccer defender Frankie Facchineri.

U Sports has ranked the Lancer men’s volleyball team ninth in the country after a pair of victories over the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold to open the season.

In varsity action this weekend, basketball will host a pair of doubleheaders at the Toldo Lancer Centre, Friday against the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Saturday against the Carleton Ravens; the women tip off at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. both nights.

Men’s hockey will face off against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at 7:30 p.m. Friday and against the Concordia Stingers at 4 p.m. Saturday, both at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.

Women’s hockey will be in London to take on the Western Mustangs on Saturday. Cross country runners visit the same city Sunday to compete in the U Sports national championship meet.
