The Office of Open Learning’s new visiting fellow, Tom Farrelly from Munster Technological University in Ireland, has spent his academic career helping marginalized students succeed in higher education.
Dr. Farrelly is an educational developer with a particular focus on eLearning, and teaches in the School of Health and Social Sciences. He is also co-chair of the institutional Human Research Ethics Committee at Munster. He has a long history of working in technology-enhanced learning and is particularly committed to supporting non-traditional learners — especially the Irish Traveller communities — and international students to succeed in higher education. He’s an open access advocate, and the Gasta Master (if you don’t know what Gasta is, check it out).
Farrelly will facilitate a number of workshops during his stay, including:
- Exploring Alternative Assessment Formats in the Age of AI, Aug. 24, 1 to 3 p.m.
- Exploring ePortfolios for Summative and Formative Assessments & Student Growth, Aug 28, 10 a.m. to noon
- A Pomodoro Rapid Writing Workshop, Aug. 30, 9 a.m. to noon
- Empowering Marginalized Higher Education Students: A Workshop about supporting and involving the Irish Traveller Community, Sept. 7, 1 to 3 p.m.
- Navigating Irish Higher Education: Supporting the Transition of International Students, Sept. 13, noon to 2 p.m.
He will be based in the Office of Open Learning from Aug. 16 to Sept. 15 and is interested in meeting with colleagues across campus to learn more about the Canadian higher education system and share his own expertise.
