Petra Monaco holds T-shirt upPetra Monaco, an Italian exchange student in civil engineering, shows off the T-shirt she received from the alumni association at the start of the Welcoming Celebration, Wednesday in the Toldo Lancer Centre.

Celebration extends welcome to new students

Welcoming Celebration turned out to be something she wasn’t expecting, said Wardah Faraj — a lot of fun.

The first-year psychology student was anticipating a dry recitation of rules but the event Wednesday in the Toldo Lancer Centre was more like a pep rally.

Besides cheers for individual faculties and prize draws, it also featured remarks of greeting from University officials and student leaders.

“It was cool seeing all the senior administrators,” Faraj said.

Computer science major Jamal Unsal also got something he wasn’t expecting — a $4,000 tuition credit courtesy of the University of Windsor Alumni Association.

“It feels like a dream,” he said as he accepted his prize from association president Gordon Orr. “I can’t wait to tell my parents.”

Other winners included:

  • the Funky FAHSS team as top participants in Welcome Week,
  • Human Kinetics for most spirited faculty team,
  • Sarah Watke as best Welcome Week student leader,

and individual raffle winners Benjie Roberto, Aditya Patel, Arran Christie, Calder Chinnery, Valerie Bunner, Wyatt Ribchester, Chris Papic-Hiller, Christina Bially, and Charlie Kerwin.

Classes start today in most programs; find a complete schedule of Welcome Week activities on the orientation website.
