Document a guide to organizing eco-friendly events

The Sustainability Event Guide, launched this week by the UWindsor Sustainability Office, is a valuable resource for academics, staff, and students committed to reducing their environmental footprint.

“It offers practical strategies and considerations for organizing eco-friendly events, promoting sustainability, and fostering inclusivity,” says Nadia Harduar, sustainability officer.

Developed in consultation with campus community members, the document covers various aspects, including promotion, food and catering, waste management, decorations, and transportation.

Harduar adds that by following the guide’s tips and suggestions, event organizers can create memorable, sustainable, and socially responsible experiences for all attendees.

Here are a few suggestions for hosting a green event or meeting:

  • Promote your event digitally and use recycled and double-sided paper for printed materials.
  • Choose locally sourced and sustainable ingredients for catering where possible and consider offering vegan and vegetarian options.
  • Minimize single-use plastics and suggest attendees bring their own reusable bottles or mugs.
  • Have a plan for handling leftover food.
  • Ensure proper waste management with clearly labelled bins, encouraging attendees to recycle and compost properly.
  • Use reusable or recyclable decorations and consider eco-friendly giveaways.
  • Select a location easily accessible by active transportation and encourage attendees to carpool or use public transit.
