Class of 1961 honoured for decades of University support

Members of the Bachelor of Commerce Class of 1961, led by long-time donor, professor emeritus, and UWindsor supporter Dave Wilson, gathered on campus Wednesday evening with president Douglas Kneale, dean of business Mitchell Fields, and other friends to reminisce and view a donor plaque recognizing their gift to the H. Allan Conway Student Catalyst and Innovation Fund at the Odette School of Business.

The Conway fund, named to honour the past Odette School of Business dean, is designed to support scholarships, new student initiatives, student clubs, and academic competitions in the faculty. The Class of 1961 is well-known for its contributions and support over nearly six decades.

“Encouraging others to support worthy causes and the private satisfaction of doing so is all the reward a donor needs,” Wilson said. “Some 57 years after our graduation, our BComm Class of ’61 continues to feel rewarded for playing a part in the University’s evolution into the ranking recently reported in the Huffington Post — the foremost of the five rising stars of Canadian universities.”

Dr. Fields noted the business school is deeply appreciative of the generosity of its alumni.

“At Odette we know first-hand the power of peer-to-peer influence,” he said. “The Class of ’61 has shown outstanding leadership through their class gift in support of our students.”

Record kicking performance earns 50th anniversary win for Lancer football

A team record six field goals by Clark Green led Lancer football to a come-from-behind 26-24 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues, Saturday at the south campus stadium.

Green went six-for-six — including the decider with less than a half a minute to play — to secure the first win this season for the Lancers in front of an Alumni Weekend crowd celebrating the 50th anniversary of the program.

Toronto had built an early 21-0 lead but Windsor’s defense held the Blues to just one additional field goal. Kaeden Walls scored the only touchdown for the blue and gold on a 30-yard pass from Sam Girard.

The squad’s next action will Thursday against the Western Mustangs in London. OUA.tv will carry a live webcast. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.

Students showcase computing skills in preliminary competition

University of Windsor and St. Clair College students gathered at the Alumni Auditorium to compete in a preliminary competition for a national programming and user interface design challenge.

The preliminary for the Code/Design to Win competition took place Friday with more than 150 students registered — the largest group of all 28 schools participating across Canada.

Code/Design to Win is sponsored by the School of Computer Science and the Office of Co-operative Education and Workplace Partnerships with Communitech, a public-private innovation hub based in the Waterloo Region.

“This is a huge event for both the University of Windsor and the School of Computer Science,” says Noah Campbell, a third-year computer science student and an organizer of the event. “It puts us on the map, and helps us be recognized as a leader in tech.”

The top 75 competitors across Canada selected in the next four to six weeks will win a weekend trip to Waterloo for the main competition in January 2019 for a chance to win $5,000.

“The event is also important to the students,” says Campbell. “They get great networking opportunities, not only amongst themselves but also with the sponsors who will be evaluating their work. This will help them get co-op internships and placements after graduation.”

Johanna Beneteau, internship co-ordinator in the UWindsor Office of Co-operative Education and Workplace Partnerships, says students participating in the competition will gain valuable industry experience.

“Our co-op employers are interested in seeing students participating in these types of events,” she says. “This is where students are able to showcase their initiative and apply their knowledge outside of the classroom.”

In additional to the weekend trip to Waterloo, event sponsors WEtech Alliance and the School of Computer Science pledged additional prizes, including Amazon gift cards and tickets to the WEtech Alliance Tech Show for any University of Windsor and St. Clair students participating in the preliminary competition.
