Cold Spray Technology

Cold Spray (CS) Technology is a low temperature powder spray process based on a kinetic approach. When high velocity solid particles impinge upon the surface of a substrate, they undergo severe plastic deformation leading to the formation of a metallurgical bond with the surface of the substrate. In this process, metallic particles (in the range of 10-150 microns) are introduced into a nozzle where they are accelerated to supersonic velocities by an electrically heated carrier gas and are then projected onto a work piece. The main objective of the project is the development of a Low Pressure Cold Spray (LPCS) process, based on the prototype of a portable CS unit fully compatible in an industrial environment, and optimization of the processing parameters for a number of coating systems to suit different operational conditions.
