Fire Safety Plans: Special Events

Event Organizers are primarily responsible for the evacuation of the attending patrons when planning a meeting or special event. It is the responsibility of the Event Organizer to evacuate the event space and have event patrons exit the building as quickly and safely as possible by using exit routes which will avoid fire or other dangerous areas.

The Event Organizer shall assign an appropriate number of event staff/volunteers to assist with evacuation and patrons requiring assistance to evacuate the building. All staff/volunteers assigned to assist with evacuation must be trained in their roles and responsibilities in the event of a fire alarm.

Special event fire plans are required for large events outside of normal business activities or those held in spaces that are not designated for occupancy or within a means of egress, a plan must be submitted to Health and Safety in advance of the event for approval from Windsor Fire Department.

Note: Event organizers shall ensure that tables do not block any means of egress or exit at any time during the event. Additionally, if for any reason a table will not be used as anticipated, that table and chairs are to be removed from area and stored out of the means of egress.
