It’s the beginning of the end for Cody Hall this week, as a demolition team prepares to bring down the former residence building.
Jones Group Demolition plans to begin razing the building on Tuesday, May 22. The work will be done by heavy equipment, with no explosives necessary, explains Mark Rudkin of Facility Services.
“The contractor will use excavators with extended reach arms equipped with shears to cut the structural steel,” Rudkin says.
A project to upgrade the streetscaping along Wyandotte from Sunset to Campbell avenues will have an impact on traffic patterns around campus, predicts Susan Mark, executive director of Facility Services.
The city project will include work to sewers, watermains, and vehicular and pedestrian pavements, beginning as early as this week at the intersection of Wyandotte and Sunset and extending eastward.
“Expect delays on Wyandotte and adjust your time to campus accordingly,” says Mark.
However, she adds, the result will more than make up for any temporary inconvenience.
Repairs to the back-up generator will take emergency power in Vanier, Laurier and MacDonald halls offline on Monday, May 14, from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Occupants of the building will not notice a difference unless there is a disruption to the regular electrical supply.

Updating the inventory records of where asbestos is located across campus will begin next week and continue over the next eight to 10 months, says project leader Dan Castellan.
Contractors from Pinchin Environmental will sample and analyze materials in every building – flooring, ceiling spaces, any place that may contain asbestos, Castellan says. He says the project follows the purchase of a new software system, which will keep track of asbestos locations in campus buildings.
The inspection of fume hoods in Essex Hall and the LeBel Building this week will ensure they are in proper working order, says project administrator Kevin Francis of Facility Services.
The hoods remove fumes, exhaust and smoke from people working with chemicals.
Contractors from James A. Smith Engineering Ltd. (JASEL) will conduct inspections of fume hoods in these buildings on Thursday and Friday, April 26 and 27, from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Members of the Campus Community Police Service will host a lunchtime barbecue today – Tuesday, April 17 – to benefit Bernie Mulligan, a UWindsor carpenter undergoing treatment for cancer.
The event will run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the eastern entrance to the CAW Student Centre and will feature hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as live music by Campus Police officers.
Friends and colleagues of Bernie Mulligan are soliciting donations to help the UWindsor staffer with costs related to his treatment for cancer.
