Kinesiology professor to develop educational leaders

The Centre for Teaching and Learning has selected kinesiology professor Dave Andrews as Teaching Leadership Chair – Educational Leadership.

Dr. Andrews will devote a portion of his time and elements of his research activities to launch strategic programming designed to support the development of educational leaders at the University of Windsor.

“We’re very excited to have Dave join us as we work toward building educational leadership capacity, and leading significant and sustained initiatives to enhance the teaching and learning culture and context at the University,” said Jessica Raffoul, acting director of the CTL.

She said that over the years, Andrews has built a strong reputation institutionally, provincially, and nationally for his work as an educational leader: “Dave has demonstrated a sustained and genuine interest in, and capacity for, developing and supporting many cross-campus initiatives.”

One such initiative, in his current role as a 3M National Teaching Fellow, includes working with other educational leaders to analyze how educational leadership is defined and formulated at Canadian institutions. This project has shown that, what educational leadership is and means is evolving quickly in higher education in this country, change which is being driven by several key factors.

He said he plans on using some insight gained by this experience, and others, to contribute positively to educational change.

“My primary motivation as an educational leader at our university has always been to advance teaching and learning, and the scholarship of teaching and learning, campus-wide,” said Andrews. “I am looking forward to collaborating with the many other educational leaders on campus to work towards this goal in the coming years.”

Andrews has received numerous teaching awards, including an Alumni Award for Distinguished Contributions to University Teaching (2010), an Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award (2016), a 3M National Teaching Fellowship (2020), and most recently, a University of Windsor Educational Leadership Award (2023).

The Teaching Leadership Chair – Educational Leadership is a two-year position starting January 2024 with an option to renew after the two-year period.
