Physics professor selected to lecture worldwide

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has named UWindsor physics professor Roman Maev its distinguished lecturer representing the Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society in as many as 40 presentations at institutions around the world.

The institute is the world’s largest association of technical professionals, with more than 400,000 members in chapters around the world. It selects distinguished lecturers each year not only for their personal contributions to a field, but for their broad knowledge.

Dr. Maev is director-general of the Institute for Diagnostic Imaging Research, which develops high-resolution, non-intrusive diagnostic imaging methods and technologies. Over his career, he has published close to 500 peer reviewed items, including 16 books and book chapters, 118 articles in refereed journals, 305 refereed conference proceedings and 30 patents.

He has already announced that one of his talks will be titled “Innovation Drives Quality: New Generation of High Resolution Ultrasonic Imaging Technology for Material Characterization and NDT in Advanced Automotive Manufacturing.”

Veterans lead as Lancers even up season record

Fifth-year players Austin Kennedy and Evan Pszczonak connected for two touchdowns as the Lancer football team defeated Laurier 39-34 Saturday on Alumni Field to even Windsor’s record at 1-1. Quarterback Kennedy completed 22 of 38 passes for 326 yards and ran for 58 yards, including a touchdown. Receiver Pszczonak finished the game with six catches and 144 yards.

The Lancers needed two rallies to win, erasing an early 13-0 deficit to take a 14-13 edge at halftime and recovering from a 33-16 Laurier lead in the fourth quarter. Read a full game recap, “Lancer football rallies twice to defeat Golden Hawks” at goLancers.ca.

Windsor will rest this weekend before heading to Waterloo to take on the Warriors on September 20.

In other varsity action, women’s soccer won both road games this weekend, 4-1 over Brock on Saturday and 2-0 over McMaster on Sunday. Becca Fuerth scored two on Saturday; Laura Leece and Giulia Barile accounted for Windsor’s other goals.  Barile notched another against McMaster after Bella Riccardi scored the winner just four minutes into the game. New social media coordinator making the rounds

Tim Brunet’s face is not new to the campus, but it has been turning up in some new places.

After 12 years in student recruitment, the UWindsor grad took up a new position late last month—as social media coordinator for the Office of Public Affairs and Communications.

Brunet, who received his BA in French and music from the University of Windsor in 1994 and went on to earn a master’s degree in communications and technology elsewhere, has enjoyed sharing welcome week activities with current students.

“I look forward to collaborating with the campus community on enhancing the UWindsor social media experience,” he said.

Check out his short videos on the University’s Vine account and an album of photos from UWindsor Welcome Week on Facebook. Contact Brunet with ideas and suggestions at tbrunet@uwindsor.ca.

Million-dollar grant to fund EPICentre support for youth entrepreneurship

A multi-disciplinary UWindsor program to support young people in the early years of their entrepreneurial careers has received a $1.1 million grant from the Government of Ontario’s Youth Jobs Strategy.

The Entrepreneurship Practice and Innovation Centre (EPICentre) received the monies through the $20 million campus-linked acceleration program, fostering partnerships between Ontario universities and local regional innovation centres. In Windsor, EPICentre will partner with the WETech Alliance to expand the regional capacity to support entrepreneurs.

UWindsor vice-president of research and innovation, K.W. Michael Siu, said he expects the funding to provide opportunities to significantly accelerate the growth of youth-led ventures.

“This program will allow our Windsor-Essex youth to develop and hone their entrepreneurial skills, as well as build their business and support networks,” he said. “These assets will give our youth a better chance to be able to succeed and prosper in the region after their graduation, and the skills are entirely portable should they choose to go elsewhere.”

Fostering the entrepreneurial spirit among students is a key component of Ontario’s Youth Jobs Strategy, according to Reza Moridi, Ontario’s Minister of Research and Innovation, and Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.

“By partnering with colleges and universities to support entrepreneurship, we are ensuring our province’s business leaders of tomorrow are getting the support they need to succeed today,” he said.
