Bachelor of Music (Honours) - Comprehensive

This degree qualifies you for:
  • Admittance into any Faculty of Education in Ontario to become a qualified high school or elementary school specialist music teacher; and,
  • Teaching music in communities, private studios, and schools at all levels; and,
  • Acceptance into graduate programs in performance and performance studies, and; UWindsor music education students receive the same high standard and amount of private studio experience as BMus in performance students.
 
A Rigorous, Enriching Program

The Bachelor of Music (Honours) is a full-time program offering intensive professional training. If your goal is a career as a musician or as a music educator then this is the program for you. Our program prepares you both academically and pedagogically for success in several facets of the music industry. Training includes courses in performance, music theory, music history, ear training, ensembles, music education and music technology, as well as non-music options.
 
The Windsor Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Fox Theatre and Michigan Opera Theatre are all just a short distance from campus. Detroit and Windsor’s thriving and influential jazz, pop, blues and electronic scenes will inspire and inform you.
 
Experiential Learning
Are you passionate about making music? This is the place. You have the option of taking private studio lessons on your instrument in either the traditional Western classical music stream or in the jazz/popular music stream.  You have the opportunity to play in a variety of ensembles for credit including: University Singers, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Jazz Combo and New Music Workshop.
 
The University of Windsor’s Music program presents more than 130 concerts, recitals, master classes and workshops each year. Our concerts feature faculty and guests in concert at acoustically excellent, intimate venues. Ensemble and Special Concerts feature performances by our student ensembles and soloists at excellent venues on campus and off. Our SoCA Fridays series offers free performances and musical presentations by our faculty, special guests and students in the school’s intimate Recital Hall.
 
Admission Requirements
  • 70% minimum admission average. The OSS Diploma and six Grade 12 U or M courses, including ENG4U, are required.
  • In addition to applying for academic admission to the University of Windsor, students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree must also apply for admission to the School of Creative Arts - MUSIC. This admission is based on an Audition.

Incoming Music students must pass a written theory test roughly equivalent to the Royal Conservatory of Music Advanced Rudiments. View a Sample Theory Test.

Faculty will know you by name and you will be part of a community of students who care about and support one another. Music students are assigned to a faculty member who is their personal academic advisor. Theory and basic skills courses have upper-year teaching assistants who are available to assist students during labs. Our active music society represents students on faculty committees and plans several great student functions throughout the year.

Our graduates have gone on to careers as professional musicians in orchestras, opera companies and Broadway shows, music educators at all levels, arts administrators, music therapists and creative entrepreneurs. Many have been accepted to some of the finest graduate schools in North America.
