Lancer teams dedicate weekend games to raising awareness of breast cancer

Lancer varsity sports teams will host eight games over the course of two days this weekend, which includes annual Breast Cancer Awareness events on Saturday, February 2.

The men’s and women’s volleyball teams will begin the action Friday as they play host to the Toronto Varsity Blues at the St. Denis Centre. The women play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.

The men’s hockey team will host the No. 3 ranked Western Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. at Windsor Arena. Players will honour their graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony and will help to raise funds for Windsor Regional Hospital through the Hats on for Healthcare campaign.

On Saturday, the Lancers will trade in their traditional blue and gold for pink as they raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. The basketball, volleyball and women’s hockey teams will “Get Their Pink On” in support of the event. Court teams will wear navy and pink warm-up shirts, while the hockey players will use pink stick tape and pink laces in their skates.

The day will start with the Lancer basketball teams hosting the Brock Badgers on Saturday at the St. Denis Centre. The No. 4 ranked men will tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the No. 1 women at 3 p.m.. The men will also host their annual alumni game Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

It’s “Pink at the Rink” for women’s hockey as the Lancers play a 4:10 p.m. game at South Windsor Arena against the No. 7 ranked Queen’s Gaels. In addition to showing support for breast cancer awareness, it is also Senior’s Day and the Lancers will recognize their graduating athletes prior to the puck drop.

Volleyball closes out the festivities on Saturday night against the Ryerson Rams. Game time is set for 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men at the St. Denis Centre, following their Senior’s Day presentations.

The sale of Lancer accessories will support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation—$10 t-shirts with a brand new design and $5 “CIS Shoot for the Cure” reusable tote bags will be available at each of Saturday’s events.

Admission to basketball is $8 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors; for volleyball and hockey it’s $5 for adults and $3 for youth and seniors; UWindsor students with ID admitted free.
