Former deputy premier among Convocation honourees

Dwight Duncan, former deputy premier and minister of finance for the province of Ontario, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree Saturday, October 19, during the University of Windsor’s 100th Convocation ceremonies.

Nearly 900 graduating students will receive their degrees in two sessions, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the St. Denis Centre.

In honour of the University of Windsor’s 50th anniversary, more than 20 members of the Class of 1963 will walk across the Convocation stage to be recognized at the morning session.

Duncan served in a number of capacities during his 18-year career in provincial politics, including chair of cabinet; government house leader; minister of energy; minister of revenue; minister of government services; and opposition house leader. He also served as minister responsible for the Ontario Securities Commission; the Ontario Energy Board; Hydro One, and Ontario Power Generation.

Prior to his tenure in the legislature, he served six years as a Windsor city councillor as well as eight years as chief administrative officer of Brentwood Treatment Centre. Duncan holds honours Bachelor of Commerce and MBA degrees from the University of Windsor as well as a BA in economics from McGill University.

Fall Convocation begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 19, when degrees will be conferred on the graduating classes in the Faculty of Engineering; Faculty of Nursing; Faculty of Science; and Inter-Faculty Programs.

At the 3 p.m. session, degrees will be conferred on the graduating classes in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Faculty of Education; Faculty of Human Kinetics; the Odette School of Business, and the Faculty of Law.
