Lancer women’s basketball star Jessica Clemençon received the 2011 BLG Award as the top female university athlete in Canada after leading her team to its first-ever national championship.
A native of Saint-Rambert, France, majoring in English, Clemençon was awarded a commemorative gold ring, a trophy and a $10,000 scholarship to attend a Canadian graduate school.
After being named CIS rookie of the year in her Lancers debut in 2009/10, Clemençon, a 6-foot-3 post, captured the 2011 Nan Copp Award as the most outstanding player in CIS basketball, becoming the first player in history to win those two awards in back-to-back campaigns.
She finished the regular season among the national leaders in almost every statistical category, including an Ontario University Athletics-leading 19.0 points per game, then led Windsor to its third consecutive OUA banner and the first of its two national titles.
Lancer head coach Chantal Vallée said Clemençon adjusted very well to Canada.
“She is fiercely competitive, as well as a great student and a very well-rounded person,” Vallée said. “Her impact on our program’s success has been tremendous and we look forward to her continued growth in the years to come.”
Clemençon admits she's shy, but says playing basketball for Vallée—who emphasizes creating better women, and not just better basketball players—has helped her come out of her shell, learn to be a little more assertive and comfortable asking questions of her professors and contributing to classroom discussions.
