Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament (SOLD OUT)

Ambassador Golf Club Hole #15
Monday, July 30, 2018 (All day)

About the Event

The Alumni Association is hosting its annual Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament on Monday, July 30, 2018 at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ontario.

The tournament offers multiple golfer engagement and sponsorship opportunities, with all proceeds from the day supporting student scholarships on campus.

Exciting Engagement Opportunities

The Alumni Association is excited to announce the addition of some exciting engagement opportunities for our golfers. In partnership with Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment Ltd. (MLSE) and the Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni, this year's tournament will welcome former Toronto Maple Leafs stars Al Iafrate and Rick Vaive. Al and Rick will be stationed on two holes during the tournament and golfers will have a chance to "beat the pro" in a closest to the pin challenge. Take a look at the bios below to learn more about Al and Rick.

Perhaps you're saving your good shots for a hole-in-one. The Alumni Association is also very excited to announce the addition of a Hole-in-One Prize of $10,000, sponsored by Dane Charles, Investment Advisor at RBC Wealth Management. Sink a hole-in-one on hole #14 and walk away with $10,000 cash!

Are you interested in tasting a couple of beers and/or wines from local breweries and wineries? You're in luck - this year's tournament will feature on-course tastings from Cooper's Hawk Winery and Frank Brewery.

Make sure to register early so you don't miss out on these exciting opportunities!

Al Iafrate ranks high on the list of the most skilled and talented defencemen in the history of the Leafs franchise. Selected fourth overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, Iafrate is the highest U.S. born draft selection in the history of the Leafs. He made his debut on October 11, 1984 and he would go on to register five goals and 16 assists in 68 games in 1984-85.

Self-proclaimed ‘The Human Highlight Film’, Iafrate possessed mind-boggling speed for a man of his size on the blue line and a blistering shot that accorded him top honours in the Hardest Shot competition at multiple NHL All-Star Game weekends.

The highest-scoring squad in Leafs history in 1989-90 had Iafrate as the backbone of their offensive attack. He was one of seven 20-goal scorers that season which matched a club record. Iafrate is the only defenceman in the long history of the franchise to record more than one 20-goal season and one of just two players at the position to reach the plateau. He recorded 22 goals in 1987-88 which tied Ian Turnbull’s 11-year old record for goals in one season by a defenceman. Iafrate then supplied 21 goals and 63 points in 75 games for the 1989-90 playoff-bound team before sustaining a season-ending knee injury on March 24. Before his trade to the Capitals in 1991, Iafrate collected 81 goals, 169 assists and 250 points in 472 regular season game for Toronto. Only seven blueliners have more career points than Iafrate as a Leaf.

Iafratere presented Toronto at the 1988 and 1990 NHL All-Star Games. Internationally, the native of Dearborn, Michigan played for his country at the 1984 Winter Olympics.

Iafrate played for Toronto, Washington, Boston and San Jose in his NHL career. He notched 463 career NHL points in 799 career NHL games from 1984 to 1998.

A quick glance of the Leafs’ record book will show Rick Vaive’s place among the truly prolific goal scorers in team history.

The right-winger has the distinction of being the first Leaf in team history to reach the lofty 50-goal mark in one season (1981-82). He also completed the feat in the following two seasons. Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy were the only two NHL players that scored more goals than Vaive over the three seasons between 1981-84. The 54 goals in 1981-82 are the most in any one season by a member of the Blue and White. Additionally, he’s just one of three Leafs in team history to crack the 50-goal barrier with Dave Andreychuk and Gary Leeman being the others.

Overall, Vaive led the team in goals four times, points once (1981-82) and penalty minutes once in 1980-81. All-time with the Leafs, Vaive sits 5th in goals (299), 10th in points (537), 17th in assists (238), 3rd in powerplay goals (90), and 9thin PIM’s (940). In 534 games with Toronto, he earned a shade over a point per game. He never scored less than 32 goals in his seven full seasons with Toronto.  Only Ron Ellis scored more goals as a right-winger for the Leafs and only Ellis and George Armstrong hit the scoresheet more than Vaive playing that position. Vaive’s10 hat tricks in a Leafs’ uniform are only surpassed by Darryl Sittler (18) and Charlie Conacher (14).

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Vaive represented the Leafs at three NHL All-Star Games and he was a three-time winner of the team’s Molson Cup Award (three star selections) in the 1980s. Vaive served as captain of the Leafs from 1981 to 1986. The Vancouver Canucks made Vaive the fifth overall pick in the 1979 Draft. Besides the Canucks and Leafs he also played for the Blackhawks and Sabres.

Save your best swing for hole #14. Sink a hole-in-one and walk away with $10,000 cash. Sponsored by Dane Charles, Investment Advisor at RBC Wealth Management.
