A thanksgiving service celebrates Peace with Victory, November 11, 1918, outside the downtown Armouries. It is one of two UWindsor sites which will project an international installation displaying images of the First World War and the names of those who died in the conflict.
The University of Windsor will join 18 other Canadian universities and colleges to display “The World Remembers,” a unique commemoration honouring those who lost their lives in the First World War.
The World Remembers project was designed to observe the centennial year of the First World War by publicly recognizing every man and woman killed in WWI. Using custom-written software accessing a massive online database, the installation projects their names and showcases an international collection of World War I photos.
The feed is simulcast worldwide and will be exhibited on two University of Windsor displays:
- at Leddy Library on Friday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and
- in the School of Creative Arts Armouries on Remembrance Day itself — Sunday, November 11 — from 12 to 4 p.m.
Both installations will be “drop-in” events that are open to the public and offer light refreshments. More information about the World Remembers is available on the project’s website.
The international feed began September 12; the University’s displays joined afterwards and will continue through the conclusion on November 11.
Because Remembrance Day falls on a Sunday this year, the University will forego its traditional observance outside Memorial Hall in favour of encouraging participation in the community event at Windsor’s cenotaph.
The observance will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, November 11, at the cenotaph located on University Avenue north of Windsor City Hall, just a short walk from the Armouries for anyone wishing to see the World Remembers.
Branches of the Royal Canadian Legion will organize additional ceremonies in Amherstburg, Belle River, Comber, Cottam, Essex, Harrow, Kingsville, LaSalle, Leamington, and Tecumseh.
