Master of Sport Management & Leadership (MSML)

Consistently ranked as one of the best programs of its kind in the world, our Master of Sport Management and Leadership (MSML) program prepares students to be effective managers and leaders in sport; to critique sports' social, historical, and cultural influences; and to develop innovative solutions to critical problems in today’s multi-faceted sport industry.

SportsBusiness, a global consulting and analysis firm which puts out a leading trade publication in the field, in 2023 again ranked the MSML program the best in Canada. The ranking takes stock of how our graduates are faring in the job market, and how they rate their experince at UWindsor. Our grads gave us a grade of more than 97 per cent in the areas of industry networks and professional mentorship, with 86 per cent of them finding work in their field within 12 months of graduation.

The MSML Thesis program allows students to conduct independent research in areas such as leadership; organizational behaviour; sport marketing; sport sponsorship and advertising; policy and governance; and philosophical, historical, and sociological perspectives of sport. Students in this program work alongside a faculty advisor to complete a thesis research project. Applicants are encouraged to review faculty member’s areas of research and contact potential advisors prior to applying.

The MSML Internship program allows students to pursue course work and an internship (360 hours) in the sport and recreation sector. Applicants are not required to select a faculty advisor when applying to this program option.

Program Requirements

Course work must include :

  • 2 courses
  • Research Methods (KINE-8620)
  • Thesis (KINE-8970)
  • One other graduate course chosen in consultation with the thesis advisor

Program duration: typically 24 months

  • Social Issues in Sport Management (KINE-8050)
  • Internship in Sport Management and Leadership (KINE-8980, 360 hours)
  • Critical Reflections and Industry Insights in Sport Management and Leadership (KINE-8990)

Program Duration: 16 – 20 months
