Instructions for Changing Your Degree Designation

On February 10, 2010, Senate approved a change in the name of the University of Windsor law degree from a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) to a Juris Doctor (J.D.).

The change in degree designation from an LL.B. to a J.D. is a change in title only. The entrance and degree requirements remain unchanged. A Windsor Law J.D. will continue to be a second-entry, undergraduate professional degree program. This J.D. will not be recognized by the American Bar Association (ABA).

If you wish to change your degree designation from LL.B. to J.D., you must concede your LL.B diploma. To do so, simply download, print and complete the Request for J.D. Diploma Replacement and send it by mail, together with your original LL.B diploma and the associated fee to:

Alumni & Fund Development Office
Faculty of Law

University of Windsor
401 Sunset Avenue
Windsor, ON

To ensure the security of your degree, we recommend that you send your original degree via registered mail. Your new J.D degree will be couriered to you and will require a signature upon delivery.

If you have lost or misplaced your LL.B diploma, please complete the Statutory Declaration to reflect the loss or destruction of your degree. Please note that the Statutory Declaration must be signed and stamped by a Notary Public to be considered valid.

Payment by certified cheque, money order or personal cheque made payable to the University of Windsor, Faculty of Law in the amount of $50.00 CDN must accompany the Request for J.D. Diploma Replacement Form and original degree by mail.

If you wish to have the replacement J.D degree delivered, you must include an additional postage fee. For courier within Canada, please remit an additional $25.00; for courier outside of Canada, please remit an additional $45.00. Please note that the courier will not deliver to a post office box. The total replacement costs for receiving the J.D will, therefore, be $50.00 for pick up, $75.00 for delivery within Canada and $95.00 for delivery outside of Canada.
