Participants are expected to compete in the Great Lakes Science Olympiad (GLSO) with an honest effort to enjoy science and compete with a spirit of fair play and competition. The goal of the GLSO is to provide everyone with an opportunity to give their best effort while displaying honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship.
Each year, new events and challenges are developed. They are devised, designed, tested, supervised, and judged by pre-service teachers in the Bachelor of Education programme. The high school teams will compete in seven different events based in the high school science curriculum. The high school students will be challenged to understand, problem solve, and complete each task within half an hour. The competitors are challenged to use the knowledge and skills learned in school to solve the question posed.
There is no foreknowledge of the events by students or teachers; hence to be successful each team must work collaboratively, cooperatively and as a cohesive group to solve the dilemma posed in the time allowed. Thus, this Olympiad encourages creativity, problem solving abilities and teamwork
The organizers are grateful to the sponsors that have contributed in previous years and are currently looking for sponsors for the upcoming Olympiad.
This year's Great Lakes Science Olympiad is being held on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 on the campus of the University of Windsor and is open to all high school students.
ONLINE REGISTRATION WILL BEGIN ON MONDAY, MARCH 21, 2011.
