An assignment to create a business plan proved educational in a number of ways, say students in professor Zbigniew Pasek’s second-year course, “Engineering Management and Globalization.”
The students worked in almost 40 teams of three or four to devise a product, set an organizational structure, develop manufacturing, marketing and financial plans, and present the results Thursday to instructors, classmates, and a team of judges from the Centre for Enterprise and Law.
Minister Joe Oliver, on behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), announced Friday the Canadian government's investment in Carleton University to create internship opportunities and fellowships for graduates and graduate students in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. This investment will also benefit businesses across southern Ontario.
The air in the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation is about to get a lot cleaner.
Workers from Nedlaw Living Walls were busy this week installing more than 1,500 plants into the building’s biowall, which will help naturally filter the air that flows through the 300,000 square foot engineering building.
Automotive manufacturers apply many of the same technologies as aerospace suppliers, making it a natural source of new business, says Peter Frise, scientific director of AUTO21.
The research network is helping automotive companies explore new opportunities within the aerospace sector, partnering with the Aerospace Industry Association of Canada to host an automotive pavilion at the Canadian Aerospace Summit, which opens today in Ottawa.
Students in Amr ElRagaby’s graduate course in bridge engineering really dug deep Thursday, as guest lecturer Biljana Rajlic discussed her work as the lead structural engineer and design team project manager of the Right Honourable Herb Gray Parkway.
The 11-kilometre, $1.4 billion project will connect Highway 401 to Interstate 75 in Michigan via a new bridge across the Detroit River.
Rajlic discussed the parkway’s design challenges, providing an overview of the roadways, utilities, geotechnical, structural, traffic management, landscaping and environmental design.
A pair of third-year civil engineering students recently found out the old adage about keeping things simple really does pay off.
Curtis Watson and Dean Rice took first place honours for the rudimentary but extremely sturdy bridge they built for the Municipal Engineers Association’s bridge-building competition held at Caesars last week.
Last year set a record for wind-energy installations in Canada and the US at an enormous: an average 100 MW terrestrial wind farm requires a $250-million investment. Wind farm owners are naturally keen to ensure that their machines operate efficiently, and that’s where Rupp Carriveau comes in.
A showcase of engineering research Friday was a great opportunity for prospective students and members of the community to see first-hand some of the fascinating work that’s going on here, according to a participating professor.
“Everyone seemed really pleased with what they saw,” said Narayan Kar, one of three researchers who opened up their labs for the Open Doors, Open Knowledge event. “It’s critical that people have a good understanding of the kind of research we’re doing here.”
