Festival a celebration of African culture

A week-long celebration of African culture will open today at 11 a.m. in the CAW Student Centre Commons.

AfroFest will showcase the art, dance, music and fashions of Africa and its diaspora with events through February 8. Today’s opening ceremonies will include an art display, fashion show, and discussion.

Blood donor clinic a chance to save lives

Noah Bondy is 19 months old and has severe Factor X deficiency, a rare blood coagulation disorder characterized by spontaneous internal bleeding. He is treated every week by injection with a medication derived from donated blood.

His mom says, “Without blood donations, Noah’s chances of spontaneous internal bleeding would be increased and he could face chronic pain from repeated joint bleeds, arthritis or even death from an uncontrolled bleed into major organs or his brain.”

Reminder: presidential address Tuesday

Students, faculty, staff and the broader community are invited to “The Future is Never What it Used to Be,” an address by UWindsor president Alan Wildeman, Tuesday, February 5, in the Centre for Engineering Innovation.

The one-hour event will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the BMO Collaborative Learning Forum, room 1100. Attendees will have an opportunity to experience the newest building on campus, as well as hear Dr. Wildeman discuss the future of universities in Canada—with a particular focus on the University of Windsor.

VABE students to showcase third-year projects tonight

Chelsea Alexander was only 15 when she had her first brush with real architecture. Her father was building a new home in Toronto’s Yonge and Eglington neighbourhood, and gave her the chance for some input on the plans, soliciting her opinion on the location of a bathroom and some of the bedrooms.

“I was so excited,” she said. “I’ve always been interested in art, and I had been drawing floor plans ever since I was a little kid, so I was thrilled for the opportunity.”

Lancer teams to tip-off against cancer

The Lancer women’s basketball team will put its perfect record on the line Saturday, as the country’s top-ranked squad hosts the Brock Badgers. Windsor’s 16-0 record has it atop the west division of Ontario University Athletics; Brock’s 15-1 is good for second.

At the top of Saturday’s double-header, the Lancer men’s basketball team will look to extend a six-game winning streak, its longest of the season. The squad’s 12-3 has it leading the OUA West and ranked fourth nationwide. They will tip off at 1 p.m.; the women play at 3 p.m.

Government extending deadline to apply for 30 per cent off tuition grant

The Ontario government has extended the 2012/13 deadline for students to apply for the 30 per cent off tuition grant until March 1.

Students who meet the requirements may be eligible for a grant covering 30 per cent of their tuition costs. Those who have applied for the Ontario Student Assistance Program are automatically considered, but all others must complete an application.

Internationally known bioartists to discuss their medium tonight

What does it really mean to have a body? How do we engage with our bodies, and how do our bodies engage with one another within the cultural, spiritual and biological sphere?

These are just a few of the questions performance and visual artist Kira O’Reilly will explore when she takes part in a discussion about the subject of bioart on Thursday night.
