Look, but don’t touch: tactile works theme of student exhibition

A provocative collection of photographs is displayed alongside more tactile works in fabric, metal, text and even baked goods in the student exhibition “No Touching!” at the LeBel Building’s SoVA Projects Gallery through February 18.

Participating artists Kacie Auffret, Erica Douglas, Brendan Greenwell, Esther Rabinovitch, Amy Simon and Victoria Symons will attend a closing reception at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 17.

One-woman play invokes spirit of Underground Railroad conductor

In her one-woman piece The Spirit of Harriet Tubman, playwright and actor Leslie McCurdy portrays the life of the famous conductor on the Underground Railroad, who led slaves from the southern United States to freedom.

Assumption University Chapel will host a free public performance on Thursday, February 16, at 7 p.m.

The play was a finalist for a 1999 Canadian Chalmers Award as best new play for young audiences, though McCurdy points out it is intended for all ages.

Fossils offer a view into history of life: paleontologist

Special types of fossil deposits allow us very rare clear views of what life was like hundreds of millions of years ago, says paleontologist Denis Tetreault of the earth and environmental sciences department.

He will explore some of those views in his free public presentation “Exceptional fossil preservation: important windows into the history of life,” Wednesday, February 15, at Canada South Science City.

His lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. and is part of the Science Café series, sponsored by the University’s Faculty of Science.

Charity effort to top up hospital services

A baby in neonatal intensive care, a mother receiving treatment for cancer, a grandfather recovering from a stroke – the Hats on for Healthcare program helps them all, says Pat Roberts.

An administrative assistant in Facility Services, she will join people all across the city wearing hats of all kinds on February 15 to solicit donations to the Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation. The foundation supports programs from paediatrics to oncology, mental health to surgery.

Zine seeking salty submissions

The English Undergraduate Student Association and Generation magazine are looking for submissions for their upcoming zine, Salt.

Think of blood, sweat, tears, oceans, salt mines and table shakers; anything your mind can create!

The editors will accept up to five pages double-spaced of prose, poetry or artwork on the theme and especially encourage submissions from new Canadian writers of all ages and backgrounds.
