Barbecue today to support local charity

It may be better to give than to receive, but sometimes you can do both. One such occasion is today's retirees barbecue for the United Way.

UWindsor retirees organize the annual event, with proceeds going to the United Way, which funds non-profit organizations in Windsor and Essex County. The barbecue will be held outside the eastern entrance to the CAW Student Centre from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Biology student braves hurricanes and sharks on remote Pacific island

Roberto Sosa has been to some remote corners of Mexico on his quest to learn more about the songs of the wren, but says nothing compared to the month he spent this summer tracking the birds on an isolated jungle island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

“In my personal experience, this was one of my best field seasons in terms of data collection,” said Sosa, a PhD student in associate professor Dan Mennill’s lab in biological sciences.

Fitness class designed to appeal to early birds

An early-morning fitness class offered three times a week at the St. Denis Centre offers early risers a workout in what the instructor says is essentially free time.

Third-year movement sciences student Lance Cosgrove leads XRcise at 7 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

“This general program combines aerobic activity with muscle strengthening and flexibility exercises to provide a full body fitness experience,” he says. “It’s a refreshing way to start the day.”

He says there are many benefits to the time slot.

Academic amnesty to encourage election participation

The University is offering a break to students with busy schedules on election day in an effort to encourage them to vote.

Senate has declared a day of academic amnesty for Thursday, October 6, the date of the Ontario election. Students who do not have a break of at least three hours between classes may absent themselves from a class in order to cast a ballot.

Students wishing to take advantage of the amnesty will not be penalized, but must inform their instructors a week in advance and provide a copy of their class schedules as proof of their eligibility.

Business students turn into pedallers for charity

Students in the Odette School of Business raised $300 for the Alzheimer Society this week with a bike-a-thon in memory of benefactor Louis Odette, who died May 18.

With his brother Edmond, Odette founded Eastern Construction Limited, one of Canada's largest general contractors. Their generous support of the UWindsor Faculty of Business led their being honoured with the naming of the Odette Building in 1991 and the Odette School of Business in 2000.
