Free barbecue to celebrate start of school year

Who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch? The entire campus community—students, faculty and staff—is invited to celebrate the start of the academic year with a free barbecue on Tuesday, September 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m. (while supplies last) in the quad between Dillon and Chrysler Halls. This event will proceed rain or shine!

The event is hosted by Special Events, Office of the President; the Alumni Association; and the University of Windsor Students' Alliance, with thanks to sponsors Food & Catering Services.

Child safety research gets $1.7 million boost

Research that will ultimately make it safer for children to get to school or home from the park whether they’re walking, pedalling their bikes or riding in the back of a car got a $1.7 million boost yesterday.

“Each year, about 130 Canadian children under the age of 15 die as a result of road traffic injuries,” said Anne Snowdon, AUTO21 Theme Coordinator for Health, Safety and Injury Prevention, and a professor at the Odette School of Business.

Auto executive defends role of humanities education

Wherever there is a need to manage and have relationship with people, there will always be a place for the humanities, says Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat S.p.A. and Chrysler Group LLC.

Recipient of a UWindsor BComm in 1979 and an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2005, he spoke with Humanities Research Group director Antonio Rossini for an interview in the group’s newsletter, Athena. Marchionne’s first degree was a BA in philosophy, and he said his humanistic education opened his mind.

Registration now open for LearnIT computer workshops

Registration begins today—Monday, September 12—for LearnIT workshops held during Fall 2011 session.

A program of Information Technology Services, it offers a wide variety of free workshops for students, faculty and staff in levels ranging from beginner to advanced in Office productivity, Lotus Notes, operating systems, statistical software, and computer security.

Semester’s tuition to keep sailor afloat

BComm student Cole Barbour said a voucher for a semester’s tuition he won during a draw at Wednesday’s Welcoming Celebration will help to keep him afloat, which comes in handy in his line of work—he’s a combat information officer with the Canadian Navy.

Currently holding the rank of ordinary seaman, Barbour hopes that completing his degree at the Odette School of Business will help him to advance.

Windsor and Essex County Mennonites trying to navigate their way through the complexities of the legal system may find more understanding ears listening to their problems thanks to the work of a UWindsor student who spent her summer learning about the justice system and offering ways to increase cultural sensitivity to vulnerable communities.

Students get a rush from welcome week activities

Fun and games were the order of the day Tuesday as UWindsor students participated in a variety of activities meant to engage them in campus life. Students Orienting Students gave away hundreds of hotdogs and hamburgers during a free barbecue lunch held in conjunction with Adrenaline Rush, which featured everything from an inflatable obstacle course to a Minute to Win It-style competition.
