Infusion of clientele necessary to save University Club

The University Club will re-open on Monday, September 16; this could be the last season it opens if the restaurant isn’t successful in attracting more customers.

The restaurant, located on the ground floor of Vanier Hall, provides a quiet place for faculty and staff to enjoy lunch in a stress-free environment. Department head Dave McEwen says if it cannot drum up enough support to pay the bills, the doors will close in January 2014.

“The last five years have seen a notable shift in customer traffic patterns both on and off campus,” he says. “Staff and faculty have more choices on campus, but we also know some are working through their lunch hours, some frequent the many eateries that are near campus, and some just want to get away from their offices and go for a stroll along the riverfront.”

The club, which opened in 1992, is one of the few remaining faculty dining facilities in Canada. It is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
