Women’s basketball team carrying Lancer banner

Women’s basketball is the only Lancer team still in the playoff hunt, after a 73-51 victory Saturday over the McMaster Marauders earned it the right to host the Ontario University Athletic championship this weekend, as well as a berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport title tournament in Regina, March 15 to 17.

It will be Windsor’s fifth straight trip to the national final eight. The squad has won the Bronze Baby trophy the past two years.

Lancer hockey teams prepare for playoff face-offs

The Lancer men’s and women’s hockey teams open their post-seasons this week in quarterfinal series against the York Lions and Queen’s Gaels, respectively.

The men travel to Toronto tonight for the first game in the three-game series and will conclude at Windsor Arena, with game two at 7:30 p.m. Friday and game three, if necessary, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The women open a best-of-three at South Windsor Arena on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. The series moves to Kingston for games two and three.

Lancers win local sports plaudits

Lancers took home more than half the hardware April 19, earning 12 of 23 Windsor-Essex County Sports Person of the Year (WESPY) Awards recognizing local athletes for their contributions to sports. The awards were based on accomplishments during the 2011 calendar year.

Jessica Clemençon brought home the evening’s top award as the female athlete of the year after a tremendous 2010/11 season in which she was named Canadian Interuniversity Sport female athlete of the year and helped lead Lancer women’s basketball to its first CIS championship.

Lancers repeat as national champs in women’s basketball

The Lancer women’s basketball team won its second straight Bronze Baby trophy as Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions, defeating the UBC Thunderbirds 69-53, Monday in Calgary.

Miah-Marie Langlois was named the tournament MVP for the second year running; Bojana Kovacevic joined her on the tournament all-star squad.

Windsor, seeded fourth coming into the CIS final 8, never trailed in any of its three contests.
