Awards banquet recognizes achievements of student-athletes

Even as she prepares to graduate, Meaghan Pototschnik says Windsor will always be her home.

“I will always be proud to say I am a Lancer,” the fourth-year nursing student said Wednesday as she accepted the DeMarco Award as the top female combining academic and athletic achievement during the annual Evening of Excellence at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts.

The golfer won a second straight provincial individual title while earning A-level grades. Massimo Megna, co-captain of the Lancer men’s soccer team, won the men’s DeMarco Award.

Lancer golfer repeats as Ontario women’s champ

Lancer golfer Meaghan Pototschnik secured her second straight Ontario University Athletics individual title Tuesday in Waterloo.

The fourth-year nursing student’s rounds of 74 and 75 garnered a three-stroke win over Waterloo’s Devon Rizzo. Her 2011 championship was a first for a Lancer women’s golfer.

O the men’s side, team captain Mike Ayotte fired a three-under round of 68 Tuesday to finish tied for ninth overall. The Lancer men finished ninth in the team competition as well.

Lancer captures OUA women’s golf championship

Lancer golfer Meaghan Pototschnik capped off a terrific 2011 campaign by capturing the Ontario University Athletics women’s golf individual championship on Tuesday in Kingston.

Sitting five shots off the lead heading into the final round, Pototschik fired a blistering 77 on Wednesday to win the individual provincial title. Her two-day total of 159 at Kingston’s Loyalist Country Club put the nursing student two shots ahead of Christine Fraser and Jane Tang.


Business students turn into pedallers for charity

Students in the Odette School of Business raised $300 for the Alzheimer Society this week with a bike-a-thon in memory of benefactor Louis Odette, who died May 18.

With his brother Edmond, Odette founded Eastern Construction Limited, one of Canada's largest general contractors. Their generous support of the UWindsor Faculty of Business led their being honoured with the naming of the Odette Building in 1991 and the Odette School of Business in 2000.

Conciliation sessions with WUFA begin today

As previously reported in DailyNews, conciliation talks between the University and the Windsor University Faculty Association continue in expectation that a successful collective agreement will be reached.

Conciliation sessions are scheduled for September 12, 14, 19, 22 and 23.
