Session to provide information on business idea competition

An event next week will bring together students interested in working with teammates from other disciplines in a competition of business ideas.

The Blue Sky Competition hosted by the Entrepreneurship Practice and Innovation Centre (EPICentre) challenges students to produce a two-minute video pitch promoting their solutions to common problem. Teams of two to four drawn from at least two differing areas of study must develop a multi-disciplinary approach in a bid to win cash prizes—the top team will receive $1,500 plus an all-expenses paid trip to Toronto.

The info night on Wednesday, January 21, will set out the problem to be solved and give attendees a chance to develop their teams. Running 7 to 8:30 p.m. in room 123, Odette Building, it includes a free dinner. To register, contact Nicole Anderson at nsleiman@uwindsor.ca.

The actual competition has a deadline of March 5, with a viewing and judging session on March 11. Find more details at www.epicentreuwindsor.ca.

Chefs show off cutting-edge culinary skills

Food Services chefs demonstrated their skills in molecular gastronomy Tuesday in the CAW Student Centre, distributing samples to students of treats they created.

“We used liquid nitrogen to make chocolate ice cream, to freeze peanut butter and Nutella into dessert bars, and to freeze-dry strawberries and banana chips,” said executive chef Paolo Vasapolli. “We also made orange foam using lecithin.”

He says recipients appreciated the giveaways.

“The students seemed excited to try some of these dishes and were impressed with the range of possibilities,” Vasapolli says.

He promises another demonstration later this semester, inviting patrons to “stay tuned.”
