University Players promises season of theatrical thrills

The 2015/16 University Players season promises a mix of sultry, whimsical, madcap, provocative, poignant, and witty, says Tina Pugliese, director of the School of Dramatic Art.

“With each season, we strive to bring you selections that will both entertain you and advance the training of our students,” she says. “This year we are creating a colourful splash of live entertainment for your enjoyment.”

The season opens September 25 with the 2003 Pulitzer Prize winner Anna in the Topics, a sensual and poetic drama, followed by Noël Coward’s comedy Blithe Spirit.

Pugliese suggests audiences escape the insanity of the holiday season with the all-ages madcap comedy, Scapino!

The new year begins with the powerful drama An Experiment with an Air Pump, followed by Brian Friel’s bittersweet Dancing At Lughnasa and closing with a lively restoration comedy of manners, The Double Dealer.

Publicity coordinator Anna Galka is particularly excited about launching a redesigned website for the student troupe.

“It looks awesome and we are quite thrilled,” she says. “We want to spread the news to the entire campus and the broader community.”

Campus community enjoys start-of-semester celebration

As a German, Frederik Ehlen is something of an expert on sausage. So you can believe him when he says Wednesday’s Campus Community Barbecue passed muster.

“This is a great idea,” the MHK student said as he enjoyed a sausage, potato chips and drink with friends on a bench in the Sunset corridor. “It’s great to be welcoming everybody with free food.”

Hundreds of students, faculty and staff turned out for the annual tradition, hosted by the Office of the President with support from the Alumni Association, Food and Catering Services, and the Office of Student Affairs. For the first time, the new pedestrian walkway replacing Sunset Avenue was the setting.

“The reviews from the students have been awesome,” said organizer Mary-Ann Rennie. “They love the space, with so much room to hang out.”

Kyle Slade and a group of his second-year classmates were on their way off-campus for lunch when the music and delicious smells drew them to the barbecue: “This is better,” he said. “Free is always better!”

The event was one of many scheduled for UWindsor Welcome Week. Today’s highlight is Adrenaline Rush, the inflatable carnival in front of Dillon Hall from 1 to 4 p.m. Find a full schedule of the week’s activities at www.uwindsor.ca/windsorwelcome.

Monday’s session will describe the collaborative research project model and the computing, technical and funding resources available through the program. It begins at 10 a.m. in the EPIC Innovation Workshop Room on the second floor of the Joyce Entrepreneurship Centre. Registration is free but required at https://ctl2.uwindsor.ca/oris/workshops/10/#wkshp-25.

Film to explore prevalence of sexual assault

A screening of the film The Hunting Ground will draw attention to the issue of campus sexual assault Thursday, September 10, at 7 p.m. in room 1120, Erie Hall.

Organizers call the film “a startling exposé of sexual assault on U.S. campuses, institutional cover-ups and the brutal social toll on victims and their families.”

Newsletter informs on entrepreneurial activities

The Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Practice Centre (EPICentre) enjoyed a great summer, reports Francine Schlosser, director of research and interdisciplinary learning.

In a lead article in the centre’s August newsletter, she cites new EPIC Founders and Faculty Fellows programs, as well as fall events geared to scientists, engineers and creative artists.

“Strategically, you will soon see more Odette academic faculty members involved in developing customized entrepreneurial programming and research across campus,” writes Dr. Schlosser. “This is an important direction for a sustainable and credible entrepreneurship centre.”

The newsletter also features a link to the centre’s annual report and accounts of its activities. Find for the newsletter, as well as a link at the top of the page to join the e-mail subscription list, at conta.cc/1LzUZoZ.
