Best of student athletics fêted at Lancer banquet

Kelsey Balkwill and John Moate were multiple award winners and walked away with the top two prizes at the Lancer Evening of Excellence, Thursday at the St. Clair Centre of the Arts.

Balkwill received the Banner Shield and Moate the Olympic shield as UWindsor Athletes of the Year.

Balkwill, a master’s student of human kinetics, joined the Lancer track and field team this year and racked up a slew of awards while leading the Windsor women to a second-place finish at the Ontario University Athletics meet and third at the national championships. She won four medals — individual gold in the 300m and 600m events and silver as part of the 4x200m and 4x400m relay squads — at the provincial tournament to claim MVP honours. At the national meet, Balkwill was named most outstanding performer after anchoring the 4x400m relay team to a new school record, again winning the 300m and 600m races, and earning silver in the 4x200m relay.

Moate is just the second Lancer ever named an all-Canadian in men’s volleyball after leading his team to its first-ever appearance in the national tournament. An OUA all-star, the middle blocker finished atop the league in blocks, averaging 1.26 per set. He appeared in all 17 matches for the Blue and Gold and ended the season with a .429 hitting percentage and totals of 135 kills, 87 blocks, and 206 points.

Mike Rocca of men’s basketball won his second and thrower Sarah Mitton from the women’s track and field team her first DeMarco Award, presented annually to Lancers who best combine academic achievement with athletic prowess.

Taking U Forward theme of Campus Technology Day 2018

UWindsor’s 11th Campus Technology Day — Thursday, June 7, in the CAW Student Centre — will be themed “Taking U Forward.”

Campus Technology Day is an interactive conference that brings together faculty, staff, and students to exchange ideas about the ways technology impacts and enhances learning, teaching, research, and community.

“Technology can make many aspects of our university more effective,” says Marcin Pulcer, assistant director for client services in Information Technology Services and chair of the Campus Technology Day 2018 organizing committee. “Campus Technology Day is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and student to share how they are using technology in innovative ways with the broader campus community.”

Organizers are now accepting proposals for Campus Technology Day 2018 presentations. They can be submitted online at https://uwindsor.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2lSWxyT9qyBOZOl.

Students show off their tech wares

Computer scientists filled the CAW Student Centre Commons with laptops on April 2, to showcase their personally crafted websites, products, and programs for the second annual Computer Science Demo Day.

Projects were presented by third-year undergraduates as well as students from the Master of Applied Computing (MAC) program. The three-hour event gave students a chance to demonstrate their work to the campus community as well as to industry, friends, and family.

“This is the perfect way to get students into top quality internships and show local industry what our students are capable of,” says Ziad Kobti, director of the School of Computer Science.

Professor Pooya Zadeh, one of the lead organizers of Demo Day, says 10 companies attended the event to take advantage of the 29 live demonstrations.

“The idea is to demonstrate who we are,” says Dr. Zadeh.  “Last year we were in the Java lab and now we had a packed event in the much larger CAW Commons, where students were able to take advantage of getting feedback from professors and directly from industry. They talked to companies about summer and future employment and networked with members from the EpiCentre — it was a great success.”

Nirali Pandya is a MAC student. She and two other students designed a ride-sharing website that she describes as a blend between Uber and a typical ride share board that connects people with an inexpensive way to travel around southwestern Ontario.

“This car sharing system is a ride search service that allows users to create an event to say they want to go from A to B, so when a user creates an event to travel from Niagara Falls to Windsor, all the users will get that notification and can easily join the event,” says Pandya. “Demo Day was a great opportunity for us to show our economically advantageous program to different IT companies.”

Alan WildemanThe May 8 Farewell Dinner of Appreciation will honour Alan Wildeman as he prepares to step down as president of the University of Windsor.

President’s farewell dinner outgrows venue

A farewell dinner of appreciation for the contributions of UWindsor president Alan Wildeman has a new date and location, after demand for attendance outstripped the capacity of campus venues.

The dinner for Dr. Wildeman, who will leave his office at the end of June, is now Tuesday, May 8, at the St. Clair College Centre for the Arts, 201 Riverside Drive West.

“When we originally announced the event, we sold out in less than a day,” says organizer Mary-Ann Rennie. “We decided to move it to allow all well-wishers a chance to applaud the tenure of a transformational figure in the history of our university.”

The event will open with cocktails at 6 p.m. in the centre’s Alumni Skyline Room. Admission is $100 per person, with the proceeds to benefit the Student Emergency Fund.

To purchase tickets, visit attend.com/PresidentWildemanFarewell or contact Rennie at mrennie@uwindsor.ca or 519-973-7059.

Awards reception celebrates excellence in medical education

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Campus recently celebrated a decade of medical education and achievements in the community and honoured recipients of the school’s 2018 Awards of Excellence.

An affiliation agreement between the University of Windsor and Western University led to the opening of the Windsor Campus in September 2008. Since then, the program has expanded to include postgraduate residents who train in Windsor, the first stages of the development of a research program, an enhanced role in helping to improve healthcare delivery in the community, and a greater role in faculty affairs.

In July 2016, UWindsor and Western and Western University recommitted to an affiliation agreement for the operation of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Campus for another 10 years.

The Windsor Campus now has more than 150 students studying across four years of medical education.

At the March 19 awards reception, Alex Carson, an education assistant housed at Windsor Regional Hospital, received an Associate Dean’s Award; clinical medicine librarian Selinda Berg received an Educator’s Award.
