Lancer athletes drafted in fight against breast cancer

Lancer varsity teams will host 11 games over the course of four days this weekend, including Saturday’s Blue and Gold and Pink events to promote breast cancer awareness.

Coach Kevin Hamlin and the men’s hockey team will kick off all the action on Thursday night as they play host to the No. 4-ranked Western Mustangs. The puck is set to drop at 7:30 p.m. at Windsor Arena.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams will then host the first of two doubleheaders against the Lakehead Thunderwolves, Friday at the St. Denis Centre. The women will tip off at 6 p.m., and the men at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the Lancers will trade in their traditional blue and gold for pink as they raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. At each event, athletics staff will offer for sale pink “CIS Shoot for the Cure” tote bags. The $5 purchase price will go directly to fund the work of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

It starts with the volleyball teams hosting the York Lions at the St. Denis Centre. The women play at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m.

The women’s hockey team will play a 4:10 p.m. game at South Windsor Arena against the UOIT Ridgebacks.

The women’s and men’s basketball squads will close out their homestand against Lakehead at the St. Denis Centre at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively.

On Sunday, the volleyball teams will honour their graduating seniors in ceremonies before their games against the McMaster Marauders, 1 and 3 p.m. in the St. Denis Centre.

The women’s hockey team will then play the final game of the weekend against the Queen’s Gaels at 4:10 p.m. at South Windsor Arena.

Tickets for Lancer basketball are $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Tickets for Lancer volleyball and hockey are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors.
