Campus to celebrate Thanksgiving holiday

Thanksgiving Day – Monday, October 10 – is a statutory holiday. There are no classes and all UWindsor offices, including the Leddy and law libraries, will close for the day.

Food Services has issued hours of operation for the weekend:

Nominations open for Research Excellence Awards

Nominations are invited for the Awards for Excellence in Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity until Friday, October 14.

Awards are made in several categories:

  • Emerging Scholars/Researchers
  • Mid-Career Scholars/Researchers
  • Established Scholars/Researchers
  • Outstanding Student Research
  • Graduate Student
  • Undergraduate Student
  • Outstanding Staff Research

Organizers have also issued a call for the names of researchers receiving external awards and honours.

Stephen Willetts, VP Finance and Administration, resigns

University President Alan Wildeman informed the University of Windsor community that Stephen Willetts, Vice President Administration and Finance, has resigned. This role oversees the management of the university’s financial, IT, human and physical resources as well as facilities planning, campus police and parking, health and safety, risk management, food services and residences.

In making his announcement, Willetts expressed his appreciation for what his years at the University have meant.

Bicentennial celebration to restrict access to Assumption Church parking lot Thursday evening

The parking lot east of Assumption Church will be closed to public use the evening of Thursday, October 6, starting at 5 p.m.

The church is hosting a celebration of the 200th anniversary of Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, founder of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a teaching order with a long history in Windsor.

A Mass celebrating the anniversary will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a reception.

Savings bonds available through payroll deduction

Share your Thanksgiving: apply now for holiday host program

A call for participation in the Host for the Holidays program is generating more interest from prospective guests than hosts, say organizers.

The program matches international students far from home with Windsor families willing to share Thanksgiving dinner.

“We have a lot of students coming forward, interested in learning more about Canadian culture and celebrations,” says international student advisor Enrique Chacon. “I am worried that we may disappoint a lot of them unless we can recruit more hosts from the staff and faculty.”

Campus mourns retiree death

Campus flags will be lowered Wednesday, September 28, in memory of retired languages professor Vincente Perez-Soler, who died June 4 in Valencia, Spain.

Dr. Perez -Soler joined the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department in 1966, received tenure in 1970 and retired in 1979.

Residence blood donor clinic open to public

A blood donor clinic scheduled for Vanier Hall on Wednesday, September 28, is aimed at students living in residence but open to all, says the Canadian Blood Service.

The clinic runs 5 to 8 p.m. in the Oak Room; as always, walk-in donors are welcome. The entire experience, including health assessment and recovery, takes about an hour.
