Thursday events to anticipate International Women’s Day

What does feminism mean today? What does it look like?

Writer Nicole Baute will discuss what it means to identify as a feminist today in a free public presentation Thursday, March 7, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

Baute is co-editor of EAT IT, a collection of women’s writing on food and gender politics due out this spring. Her fiction has been published in Joyland Magazine and The Feathertale Review, and her journalism has appeared in Toronto Life, Open Book: Toronto, and several Canadian newspapers.

Events encourage remembrance of murder victims

Events this week will mark the December 6 National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women to honour the 14 female engineering students who were murdered at Montreal’s École Polytechnique on that date in 1989.

The Womyn’s Centre will host a screening of the 2009 film Polytechnique in the Oak Room, Vanier Hall, on Tuesday, December 4, at 6:30 p.m.

Charity drive focuses on personal care products

What if you could help someone in need without making a real sacrifice?

That’s the assumption behind a charity collection drive organized by the campus Womyn’s Centre, which in addition to soliciting donations of canned goods and clothing to benefit clients of local women’s shelters, is hoping to collect toiletries and other personal care products.

Charity fashion show to reflect diversity of taste—and models

Organizers of a charity fashion show on campus this week are making an effort to capture the glitz of a high-end presentation, without reflecting stereotypical preconceptions of what makes a good model.

The show, labelled “Fearless,” is presented by Students for Charitable Enterprise in partnership with the Womyn’s Centre as a fundraiser for Hiatus House, a social service agency offering confidential intervention for families experiencing domestic violence.

Ceremony to commemorate victims of Montreal Massacre

The Womyn’s Centre, in partnership with the Engineering Student Society, has planned a ceremony Tuesday to commemorate the victims of the Montreal Massacre as the centrepiece of a series of events observing the National Day of Remembrance of Violence Against Women.

The day will begin with an information fair featuring local organizations committed to ending violence against women and service agencies which provide support for women in the CAW Student Centre Commons from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
