Community choir promises a great day of song Sunday

UWindsor students, staff, alumni and retirees are among the performers who will take to the stage Sunday, April 15, for the Windsor Community Choir’s spring concert, “A Great Day of Song.”

The program begins at 7 p.m. in Assumption University Chapel and will feature pieces ranging from traditional hymns and spirituals to the Beatles’ Here Comes the Sun to a medley from Les Miserables.

UWindsor commits nearly $2.5 million to projects supporting University’s mission, vision and values

In an ongoing effort to support its strategic plan, Thinking Forward, Taking Action, the University of Windsor has committed nearly $2.5 million in 2012/13 funding for new initiatives and programs to improve the student experience, pursue strengths in research and graduate education, recruit and retain the best faculty and staff, and engage in and build community and international partnerships.

Basketball coach among Chamber honourees

In recognition of her outstanding professionalism, community service, inspiration and mentoring of young athletes -- especially women – the Windsor Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce will confer the 2012 Athena Award on Lancer women’s basketball coach Chantal Vallée during its business excellence awards, April 25 at the Ciociaro Club.

The award honours men and women for business excellence, for community service, and for encouraging women to achieve their leadership potential.

Anne Dennahower, undergraduate secretary in the Faculty of Nursing, won Monday’s DailyNews trivia contest and earned two tickets to see the University Players production of Some Girl(s), the company’s last show of the season.

Engineering students challenged to think outside the box in national competition

Drawing on inspiration from a futuristic personal transit system being implemented in the United Arab Emirates, four UWindsor Industrial Engineering students came up with a solution to the transportation travails associated with urban sprawl, earning them a second place finish at the Provincial Ontario Engineering Competition and a place at the table for the national competition held recently in Vancouver.

Book awards a family affair

Natalie Ethier is really following in her mother’s footsteps.

A senior at L’Essor high school, she plans a career in education like her mother, Rachelle Ethier, a teacher at Tecumseh’s Ecole St-Antonie. And like her mother, Natalie Ethier is a recipient of a Human Kinetics Book Award – one of 25 given out Thursday to the outstanding student-athlete graduating from each area high school.

“I have always had a love for sports and I always wanted to teach,” said Ethier, an all-star volleyball, basketball and soccer player who also maintains an A-average in her classes.

Students headed to provincial business plan competition

UWindsor students Paul Peladeau and Steve Nicodemo and their partner in Windsor-based media company LiquidWild, Sean Davidson, have won their way to the business plan competition at the Ontario Centres of Excellence’s 2012 Discovery Conference.

The creative trio entered their business plan through the Centre for Enterprise and Law, where they have been enjoying an OCE-sponsored internship and mentorship to help launch their business to its fullest potential.

Accountant training program wins national recognition

A program to qualify internationally-trained accountants to Canadian standards at the Odette School of Business has won an award from the profession’s national governing body.

Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor received a CMA Canada National Recognition Award for its partnership of the University of Windsor and Certified Management Accountants of Ontario in the skills development program.

Since 2009, the program has received more than 234 applications, provided training to 70 women, and enjoyed a participant employment rate of 86 per cent.
