This weekend the School of Creative Arts’ Wind and Jazz Ensembles are in concert at the Capitol Theatre.

Friday, Nov. 24, the University Wind Ensemble takes the stage under the direction of Michael Seguin. The concert features the traditional music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, notably the English Folk Song Suite and Sea Songs. Musicians will then take the audience on a journey through 25 years of Broadway classics by the late composer Robert W. Smith, featuring his work Songs of Earth, Water, Fire and Sky, inspired by a collaboration with UCLA professor emerita Charlotte Wilson Heth.

“This work is based on Dr. Heth’s research on the musical and dance traditions of Indigenous North Americans including music of her own nation, the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma,” says Seguin. “In 2022, Dr. Heth received the American Folklore Society Lifetime Achievement Award for examining and affirming the diversity of human creativity and advocating for respect and mutual understanding of the world’s diverse cultures.”

On Saturday Nov. 25, get ready to be entertained as the Jazz Ensemble takes the stage under the direction of Robert Fazecash.

Enjoy an evening with the University Jazz Ensemble featuring works from jazz legends Nat Adderly, Charlie Parker, and Chick Corea as well as popular songwriters and performers Burt Bacharach and Aretha Franklin. This concert features multiple soloists including vocalists Sabrina Novelletto, Madeline Abanid, and Emily Giugovaz, all students in the studio of Shahida Nurullah.

Tickets for these concerts are $20 adults and $10 students.
