Local professionals recognize dean of engineering

The Windsor-Essex chapter of the Professional Engineers of Ontario has named Graham Reader, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, its 2010 Engineer of the Year. The honour is awarded on the basis of significant contribution to the engineering profession.

The organization recognized Dr. Reader at a luncheon held Friday to mark the end of National Engineering Week. His citation noted his research, service to the community, and his work to establish the Centre for Engineering Innovation, currently under construction on the UWindsor campus.

"Dr. Reader has been a tireless Dr Readerchampion for pushing to have the best in this new complex to benefit its future students, staff, faculty, and the community at large," said Dan Castellan, a project engineer in Facility Services and member of the PEO board

Reader was appointed dean of Windsor Engineering in 1999. He previously served as head of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Calgary, and director of research and resources at the Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon, in Plymouth, England.

In his role as dean, he is credited with laying the groundwork for modernization of the curriculum, strengthening ties with industry partners, and establishing the WinOne office to provide support for first-year engineering students.
