Google Scholar

Why Use Google Scholar

  • The ubiquity of Google: biggest name recognition
  • Popular search method, as it's a familiar interface for users: many institutions have integrated their databases, such that even if the resource is in a subscription database, you can then click on its title and access it via your institution's services
  • Lets searchers follow you and get alerted when you have new publications
  • Has its own popular impact tracking
  • Very simple to set up and maintain
  • Coverage: covers articles published between 2012 and 2016

Create a profile

  • Go to scholar.google.com and click on "My Profile" in the upper lefthand corner
  • Although you'll be using your UWin email later, you will need a Google account (GMail, etc) to start this process. Sign up for one now if you don't already have one.
  • Fill in the profile form.
    • Use your uwindsor address for the "email for verification"
    • Be sure to enter your name as it appears in your articles
  • Click on "Next"
  • Scholar will send an email to the address you entered above. Verify your email.
  • At this point, you can add articles

Add Articles

  • Scholar will make suggestions, which you can go through and accept or reject (it often will pull articles in by authors with semi-similar names).
    • Scholar will present groups of articles that it thinks belong to you.
    • You can check off the group that actually were written by you.
    • Then within the group, select all the articles that belong to you.
  • Then, click the blue arrow in the right hand upper corner.
  • If Scholar hasn't picked up one or more articles, you can add them manually, once you've finished your profile.
    • From your completed profile homepage, click on the + sign next to the Title heading, then select "Add article manually"
    • Fill in the relevant information, then click the blue checkmark to save
    • This doesn't upload the actual item to Scholar, but rather creates a citation to it. Unfortunately, you aren't able to add a link to work located on SSRN, our insitutional repository, etc. However, Google will eventually index items on academic repositories, at which time the article will be linked.

Adjust Settings

  • You can choose between having your profile updated automatically, or having proposed updates emailed to you
    • Be very careful of auto-update! Ideally, don't allow Google Scholar to update your profile automatically. If you do elect to go with auto-update, check back regularily to ensure that other authors materials aren't being included in your profile.
  • Once you have everything looking correct, you can choose whether to make your profile public or not.
    • As a Scholar profile is an excellent way to promote your scholarship, we do suggest you make it public
