Orientation program to give new students a Head Start on university life

More than 1,000 newly-admitted first-year students—and their families—will get their first taste of campus life starting this week, as they attend the Head Start academic orientation program.

The program, organized by the Educational Development Centre, includes information sessions about university life for both students and parents; academic advising; presentations on residence and food services; an information fair highlighting campus services; tours and more.

Days are divided by faculty:

  • Students in business, engineering, nursing, science and inter-faculty programs on May 24, 25 or 28
  • Students in human kinetics, arts, or social sciences on June 7, 8 or 11

Students can register online at www.uwindsor.ca/headstart.

Daily draws to offer $1,000 scholarship

New this year, attendees may enter a draw to win a $1,000 scholarship during each day of Head Start—a total of $6,000 in giveaways. The second-place prize for each draw is $100 in UWinCASH.

The prize draws will be held at 1:30 p.m. each day at the CAW Student Centre information desk; winners must be present to claim their prize.

Buttons to signal a welcome to UWindsor

The Educational Development Centre asks the campus community to help prove to Head Start participants that the University of Windsor was the right choice. If you notice any students or parents on campus during this time period, please take a moment to smile, introduce yourself and help them find their way.

And to help welcome newcomers to campus, staff and faculty are invited to wear “Ask Me” buttons, which help visitors identify people who can provide them with directions or basic campus information.

The buttons are white and sport the university’s official logo. To get yours, e-mail Joanne Gibbs in Student and International Affairs at buddy@uwindsor.ca.

Marketplace to fire up grill for Head Start

To accommodate the influx of Head Start visitors, the Marketplace food court in the CAW Student Centre will open Bernie’s Grill, Marche Pasta and the Hot Line in addition to Second Cup, Subway, and Pizza Pizza. The Second Cup will operate from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the other stations will open for lunch between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
