Documentary offers an exploration of global village

The International Wednesdays documentary series presents a screening of the animated film If the World Were a Village, February 13 at noon in the International Student Centre on the second floor of Laurier Hall.

There are more than six billion people, but if we imagine the entire human population of the world as a village of just 100 people:

  • 22 people speak a Chinese dialect
  • 20 earn less than a dollar a day
  • 60 are always hungry
  • 24 have televisions in their home
  • 32 are of Christian faith
  • 17 cannot read or write
  • 39 are under 19 years old.

If the World Were a Village tells us who we are, where we live, how fast we are growing, what languages we speak, what religions we practice and more.

The shrunk-down statistics—some surprising, some shocking—and director David J. Smith's concept of building “world-mindedness” will encourage viewers to embrace the bigger picture and help them to establish their own place in the global village.

International Wednesdays screenings are free and open to the public.
